Former General Secretary of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), Apostle Immanuel N. O. Tettey, has called for renewed attention to discipline, character formation, and moral responsibility in Ghana’s educational institutions, expressing concern over reports of increasing misconduct among students in senior high schools.

Speaking with GPCC News, Apostle Tettey observed that recent incidents involving student indiscipline, including acts of disrespect toward both fellow students and teachers, point to broader challenges within society’s value systems. He cautioned that if such trends are not addressed proactively, they could have far-reaching implications for the nation’s social development.

Reflecting on the possible causes of the challenge, Apostle Tettey suggested that Ghana’s gradual departure from long-held values such as discipline, respect for authority, communal responsibility, and accountability may be contributing to current concerns.

He noted that while engagement with global ideas and perspectives can bring valuable opportunities, there is also a need to ensure that societal structures and cultural values are preserved and strengthened. According to him, the weakening of traditional support systems, without adequate alternatives to guide and mentor young people, has left significant gaps in character development.

“A society thrives when its values are intentionally nurtured,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of restoring systems that encourage responsible behaviour and personal accountability.

Family Values

A central theme of Apostle Tettey’s message was the indispensable role of the family in shaping individuals and strengthening communities. He described the family as the primary environment where values are learned, character is formed, and future citizens are prepared to contribute positively to society.

“When have a strong family, we have a good society. But when family values are broken or overlooked, the entire community suffers,” he noted. Conversely, he warned that the erosion of family values can have wider consequences for national development and social cohesion.

Apostle Tettey also highlighted the Church’s responsibility in addressing the moral and social challenges facing contemporary society. He encouraged Christian leaders and congregations to renew their commitment to intentional discipleship, ensuring that spiritual growth is accompanied by character development and practical Christian living.

While acknowledging the vibrancy and growth that charismatic movements have brought to the Church, he emphasized the importance of balancing spiritual expression with the deliberate nurturing of godly character, integrity, and social responsibility.

“Christ came to give us liberty, but that liberty must be well managed,” he stated. “The Church must go back to discipleship – teaching and nurturing individuals at a personal level to instill family values, societal responsibility, and Christian principles.”

Despite the challenges, Apostle Tettey expressed optimism that positive change is possible. He believes that through the combined efforts of families, churches, schools, and communities, the values necessary for national progress can be restored and strengthened.
