Religious Groups, Political Parties, and Electoral Commission Commit to Peaceful 2024 Elections

In the demonstration of unity, Ghana’s religious and political leaders, and the Electoral Commission pledged their commitment to a peaceful 2024 election during the Peace Campaign held on Sunday, 3rd November 2024 in Accra.

The program was organized by the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) in collaboration with  the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG), the National Association of Charismatic Christian Churches (NACCC), the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, and the Office of the National Chief Imam. The event rallied around the theme “Let Peace Prevail.”

The campaign drew Ghanaian leaders from various sectors, all adorned in the national colours, waving flags, and moved by inspiring performances from gospel artistes Rev. Joe Beecham and Rev. Alexander Bruce-Ghartey (Uncle Ato).

A Call for Peaceful Discourse

Key leaders, including former President John Dramani Mahama (NDC), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh representing the NPP, the APC Presidential candidate Hassan Ayariga, Movement for Change representative Nana Ohene Ntow, and EC Deputy Chairman Samuel Tettey, attended the event, underscoring the commitment to peace across political lines.

Delivering remarks on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng urged all Ghanaians to avoid provocative language during campaigns. “Politics should be devoid of insults and hate speech,” the President’s message stated, calling for respect for the electorate’s choice and a calm election atmosphere.

Party Leaders Emphasize Peace and Unity

In his remarks, Mr. Mahama urged Ghana’s faith-based groups to stand as guardians of the nation’s democracy, describing peace as “a precious gift from God that requires active care.” Representing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Prempeh affirmed the NPP’s dedication to peace, even announcing the party’s readiness to sign a peace accord to underscore their commitment. Nana Ohene Ntow, representing Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change, highlighted the duty of influential leaders to foster peace, while Mr. Ayariga emphasized the need for a resolution to the Bawku conflict, calling it critical for national stability.

United Voices for a Peaceful Election

Addressing the gathering, GPCC President, Apostle Eric Nyamekye emphasized the importance of intentional efforts for a peaceful election, calling on citizens to make sacrifices and seek a compromise for the common good. Representing the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu urged the youth to avoid being manipulated for violence, reminding them, “This nation belongs to you and your future.”

The Peace Campaign highlighted the collective commitment of Ghana’s leaders and citizens to unity and stability, as all united under one goal: a peaceful, successful 2024 election.
