Prof. Samuel Oheneba Dornyo Advises on Modern Parenting Challenges

The President of the College of Counselling and Psychology, Prof. Samuel Oheneba Dornyo, has offered insightful guidance to parents on navigating the complexities of modern parenting.

Speaking on the challenges parents face today in an interview with GPCC News, Prof. Dornyo emphasized that parenting is a demanding and multifaceted responsibility, particularly in the current fast-paced world.

Parenting is not easy job for parents, especially in our time. The world is changing fast especially in technology, education and moral behaviour, and there are so many things vying for the attention of young people,” Prof. Dornyo stated. He acknowledged the economic pressures parents face, which often necessitate seeking better financial opportunities to meet family needs. This pursuit, however, can inadvertently lead to producing delinquent, children if not carefully managed.

Importance of Parenting

Prof. Dornyo stressed the importance of understanding parenting as an investment. “The amount of time invested in parenting will result in the kind of children they get,” he said.

He highlighted the need for a balanced approach, where parents not only strive to meet economic demands but also ensure they do not lose sight of their children’s Christian upbringing.

Above all, Prof. Dornyo underscored the necessity of seeking divine guidance in parenting. “We need the help of God who established this institution of parenting, to help us navigate the challenges of childhood and adolescence,” he noted. He called for parents to make a conscientious effort to balance their pursuit of financial goals with their responsibilities towards their children’s moral and psychological developments.

To address the growing challenges in parenting, Prof. Dornyo suggested organizing seminars and training programs through churches and community organizations. He urged the involvement of psychologists and counselors in these programs to provide parents with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle the effective parenting.

Training program

He concluded that “We need the wisdom of God and human efforts. Seminars and training programs on parenting skills should be organized by churches and community groups. Psychologists and counselors should be invited to train parents, making the journey of parenting more manageable,” he said.

His call to action highlights the critical need for holistic support systems for parents, combining spiritual, psychological, and practical guidance to foster well-rounded and responsible future generations.
