GPCC General Secretary Calls for Circumspection of Religious Bodies towards 2024 Elections
The General Secretary of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), Apostle Immanuel Tettey, has cautioned the Christian community to refrain from turning the upcoming 2024 General Elections into a religious contest.
Addressing the concerns of the National Executive Council during his regional tour, Apostle Tettey emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and unity during this unique election period.
Apostle Tettey highlighted the significance of the 2024 elections, noting that for the first time, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is a sitting Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, while former President John Dramani Mahama is contesting for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The General Secretary pointed out this when engaging the Bono Regional Executives as part of his regional tour in the month of July and August 2024.
He mentioned that both major political parties have Christian and Muslim candidates as Flagbearers, which adds a distinct dynamic to the elections. He echoed the sentiments of the GPCC President, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, who has cautioned against framing the elections as a religious battle.
Pray Fervently
The General Secretary called for fervent prayer for peace, “We need to pray fervently for peace during this election period,” Apostle Tettey stated. “While we all have a civic responsibility to vote, it is crucial that we avoid influencing our congregants in a way that could create division. We must circumspect in using the pulpit to address election matters.”
In its efforts to promote peace, the GPCC has engaged with various stakeholders. The Council has met with the high-ranking officials of the Ghana Police Service, urging them to act professionally to ensure a peaceful electoral process. Additionally, discussions have been held with the Electoral Commission, and plans are in place to engage with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) on election procedures and the media’s role in promoting peace.
Furthermore, the GPCC has met with key flagbearers, including John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and independent candidate Alan Kyerematen, to encourage a reduction in tensions as the elections approach.
Apostle Tettey reassured that the GPCC is committed to ensuring that the 2024 General Elections are peaceful, urging all Christians to join in prayer for a successful outcome.
