A professional counsellor, Apostle James Kofi Abbrey has called for more professional counsellors in churches to deliver quality services.
According to him, professional counselling services in corporate, financial and religious institutions especially the Churches are necessary for national development and so should be a national concern.
Churches need Professional Counsellors
Speaking in an interview, he said he has observed that church members encounter several challenges in their marriage and daily lives which need professional counsellors to deal with but lack the numbers to provide the services.
“No institution can flourish without the assistance of professional counsellors, therefore churches must take the responsibility of training more professional counsellors in their churches,” Apostle Abbrey pointed out.
Apostle Abbrey who is the executive Director of Holistic Training and Counselling Consult observed that a number of professional counsellors also do not upgrade themselves through their day-to-day activities, noting that “the contributions of professionals would be greatly enhanced if they acquired training as professional counsellors.”
He said professional counsellors would help to drastically reduce if not completely eliminate the increasing cases of divorce, addiction, suicide, rape, child abuse, spouse abuse and general mental health conditions of people.
The Director reiterated the need for the establishment of welfare and counselling units in churches and urged the various ecumenical bodies such as Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), and Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) to ensure their members establish such units in their various churches to contribute to national development.

Apostle Abbrey who is also the Head Pastor of Divine Bible Builders Church admitted that, even though some churches had such units, they were not operating effectively.
“Preaching and prayer alone cannot solve problems. There are some issues that demand the services of a counsellor, and that should not be neglected. Licensed Professional counsellors have been trained to see beyond the challenges of people and help them overcome them,” Apostle Abbrey stressed.
Citing instances, the man of God mentioned that, when a driver has a problem with his or her car, the person would take it to the mechanic to fix it and when the driver is sick he would go to a doctor but not a mechanic, therefore until pastors realise some problems are for professional counsellors things would continue to go wrong.
Advising the Youth on addiction, he said that it would not help them in anyway but destroy them therefore they should seek proper counselling and take pragmatic measures to quit if they are involved.
