The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has lauded government’s plans to establish a Charities Bureau to regulate the activities of religious organisations in the country.
This decision has become necessary to bring sanity in the activities of churches, particularly those belonging to ministers of the gospel with questionable character.
Laud Government
Speaking on behalf of the Council, the General Secretary of the Council, Rev. Emmanuel T. Barrigah in an interview commended government, pledging the GPCC’s support for the initiative which will involve the various ecumenical bodies.
The General Secretary noted that, the issue of false ministers of the gospel has reached an alarming rate that needed to be addressed by a higher authority.
He said these charlatans continue to tarnish the image of the church and religious leaders in Ghana without remorse and needed to be stopped through self regulation and other means.
“The issue came up for discussion when the clergy recently met with the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo,” he said.
The Clergyman said the President gave the hint that there would be a Charities Bureau to deal with the issue.
“We are proposing a Council that will be made up of ecumenical bodies that are already in existence so that we can do some form of self-regulation,” he stressed.
Violate Human Rights
According to Rev Barrigah, some of the issues emanating from the churches bordered on human rights violations, while others infringed on the country’s tax laws.
However, Rev. Barrigah said the churches were paying taxes in various forms, including those on profit –making ventures and income tax for its employees.
